THE STONE MAIDEN (Soft Cover)

Excerpt: The following day Donald Tate made his way down the hill to the tickle where Danny lived. A small wood frame house stood stark against a small hill. It had a whimsical look about it because of the riot of wild ladyslipper, daisies, lupine and pink poppy that grew in profusion around it. Tall foxgloves adorned the walls adjacent to the door. Someone had taken the trouble to week which enhanced the overall effect. Though the house was partly sheltered on two sides, Donald could not imagine it being warm enough in winter; the sea winds could be chilling and relentless. He knocked, package in hand. Helen answered the door. He stood there, tall, lean, and slightly bent. She had seen him around town but now, up close, she realized that Melora did not resemble him at all. His nose is large, she thought, but not too large for a man--and he has kind eyes.
Synopsis The setting is Canso, Nova Scotia, during the Depression and Prohibition. Danny helps his father empty the chemical toilets, so he is nicknamed Stinky. He is poor but plucky and dares set his sights on the beautiful Melora, who is very much a lady. Her father Donald is publisher of The Breeze. Her mother Elizabeth is a snob who disapproves of Danny. A running battle ensues. Danny is our hero--he likes to get even. The townspeople, who play a significant part in his struggle, love him. You will love him too. Find out how Danny overrides adversity to become a man among men.
