Excerpt: We were a lively group of tourists and enjoyed our coffee dates anywhere along restaurant row on the main street of the Sultanahmet district. Each night I was walked to the bus stop and most of the group waited for the bus with me. I seemed to be the only one in our little coffee klatch that was not staying in a tiny, airless pansyion in the Sultanahmet district and had I planned on staying much longer I would have moved. Each night I got off the bus in four short stops and walked the couple of blocks to my hotel. I always walked quickly and purposefully but there were never many people on the street like there had been in the smaller communities. By the third night the blackness and the lack of people had started to unnerve me. I suddenly felt that someone might have been watching my nightly commute and I became more than slightly uncomfortable. However I didn?t stop. I felt it was worth meeting my friends and enjoying their company for the evenings. Although I had breakfast in my hotel every morning I had not met anyone to enjoy my morning meal with or who spent any time talking about their adventures. Several months later, when I relayed the Istanbul story to the Webbs and the Higgs back in Temple Cloud, England they were horrified. No one, I was told, especially not single women walk the streets of Istanbul alone at night. What is that saying about ?God protects drunks and fools?? Well I don?t drink much so you know what category I fall into but since I am here to tell the tale, all went well.
