Excerpt: King's Bridge Park, located at the mouth of the Chippawa Creek, is an historic site. On December 7, 1678, LaSalle's exploration party, the first Europeans to lay eyes on the mighty falls, camped overnight here. In the 1700's, the French had a clearing and perhaps a storehouse, at the mouth of the Chippawa where they cut timber for shipbuilding on Navy Island. In 1791, the British government built wharves, docks and a small fort. The first King's Bridge was built that same year.
