Adult Education and Decision Making for School Success
by Andrew Spowart, B.A., M.A., M.Ed. « View this author's BIO
Excerpt: During my elementary school years I experienced constant failure. As a result I usually felt as if I was one or two steps behind my classmates. I gradually lost personal confidence and motivation, eventually becoming convinced that I was indeed a failure. My solution? At the age of 14 I became an elementary school dropout. And I remained uneducated until the age of 24. At the age of 21 I joined the Canadian Air Force. Little did I realize that the "unnatural educational detour" that I had experienced for so many years was to end. During my three years in the Air Force I read numerous textbooks and independently completed approximately 300 written assignments which were corrected and graded by educators throughout Canada. I left the CAF having completed grade 8 through 12 by correspondence courses. I had never attended high school, but at the age of 25 I did enrol in one for a year in order to complete grade 13. At that time I felt, that in all probability, this would complete my new educational journey. I was wrong. The years ahead would allow me to reach academic heights far beyond anything I could imagine, at that time.
